The Excitement Of Soccer Northern Territories


The Football Federation Northern Territory is the state governing body for soccer northern territory, Australia. It is an affiliation of the football federation Australia which is the national governing body. Football, until very recently was known as soccer.

Soccer in Australia has traditionally been a male sport up to the twentieth century when woman began playing the game right from the grassroots level to the highest level of the game. Australians love their 'footy' and every weekend during the colder months, people descend on the football stadiums all around the country in order to support their favourite teams. The professional soccer (football) season usually starts in March through September. The football code an Australian would follow is dictated by the place they live or come from, their cultural heritage and the code they were taught at school.

TFA (Telstra Football Anytime) which is an introductory football program for girls and boys aged 6-12 years is being delivered nationally including the northern territories by the FFA (Football Federation Australia) from March 2006. The program which will consist of six sessions will be delivered in community hubs and in school based programs and they will be co-coordinated by the accredited FFA coaches.

The TFA is an ideal introduction program for children and is "game centered". It also encourages the children to play the game anytime, anywhere, and with anyone. The focus of the program is on small-sided games and age appropriate activities with emphasis laid on the enjoyment of the game. The game being unstructured provides an environment where the kids are able to express their individuality, and progress at their own level. It also allows parents become actively involved and excitement of playing football.

For the people of Bathurst and Melville Islands (the Tiwi islands, which are 100 km north of Darwin) football is like a religion. Football was played in the islands since 1930, the first ball was an old leather football case stuffed with rags. However, by the 1950's competition had begun and the winning team was given a 23 kg of flour from the losers. It was not until 1990's did boots become mandatory in these islands.

Mindil Aces soccer club formed in 1972 is a long standing member of Darwin soccer. With expansion in recent years they are the largest club of soccer Northern territories, fielding a team in men, women, and junior competition of Darwin. The club is multicultural, representing the private, public and self employed sectors of Darwin, northern territories.
