Driving around the northern territory certainly allows you to experience, and takes you through many different regions, each offering a unique type of experience. The northern territory outback is a land of rugged landscapes where the pace of life calms you, and nature soothes your senses and importantly the people have a smile and also a story or two to offer. There are various options open to the visitor interested in driving in the northern territory; either drive around in your own vehicle or hire a van to travel around. However, due to the vast distances in the region driving around can prove to be expensive, unless maybe you are moving around in a group. You have to take into consideration the high fuel costs, the cost involved for parts and maybe labour if the vehicle should break down, insurance fees and other running costs.

Driving around in the northern territory on a holiday gives one the freedom and flexibility to be able to explore the many beautiful sights at your own pace. The northern territory roads will take you through some wonderful and breathtaking sceneries that Australia has to offer. To travel the northern territory is to encounter a land of extremes. Though the land appears harsh and rugged to the visitor is a land that has been traveled and lived in for thousands of years. The northern territory is home to a very ancient culture and an even more ancient landscape. The landforms of the northern territory breathtaking as they are, were formed millions of years ago, which has given rise to a culture that is estimated to be over 50,000 years old - the aboriginal culture which makes it the oldest culture in the world. The aboriginal Dreamtime stories and every aspect of the aboriginal culture explain and strengthen the relationship of the people with the land.

In the northern territory roads are sealed and unsealed in some parts of the land and include many four wheel-drive adventures routes. Most of the major tourist spots including those of Darwin, the kakadu National Park, tenant creek, Katherine, Alice Springs etc. are accessible by sealed roads.

Driving, though an excellent way to visit and see the northern territory, one must also take precautions. despite a good road system there are however vast expanses and some unique road conditions; many roads are unfenced hence wandering stock or wildlife can create safety hazards, therefore driving at night can be avoided in order to reduce the risk of striking one of these animals.

Finally, when driving around the northern territory though each day guarantees something different it is important to choose the right season and climate. The Top End has a lot of sunshine - even during the wet season. It would help to remember that the WET is from November right through till April, the DRY is from May to October. Though the Dry season is popular for the holidays it is however the WET that gives the northern territory its beautiful sceneries.
